84 TA not starting fuel
84 TA not starting fuel
Hello, I’m the original owner of an 84 L69 trans am. I’ve been trying to find a mechanic in the Orlando area for a while if anyone has advice.
So I’m not real handy but have a buddy trying to help. I parked the car4 years ago with a full tank before I went in for a liver transplant. We’ve figured out the car is getting spark and tries to start with brake fluid sprayed in carb. Everything is all original except a pollution canister to carb was removed. I think it has the pusher pump in tank. If it’s the filter or mechanical pump will it start without in tank pump? I’m not much of a mechanic and need help. My friend lives 200 miles away so I’m thinking about trying a mobile mechanic. One other thing not original is someone recommended an inline filter after the mechanical pump that’s been in there for years. The thing ran okay except for a high idle issue that would eventually kick down prior to my illness. I think the choke pull off may be bad. Any advice on getting my old bird running before I die?
I’m in fair health at best. Summary is it old fuel, pump in tank or most likely mechanical pump? Appreciate any advice and mechanic recommendation if possible. Thanks,Kevin Oviedo FL

OK, safety is up to you !!!!!!
You are carbureted, so you can connect a rubber fuel line directly to the carb and run the other end to a gas can with about 1 gallon of fresh fuel in it securely held above the height of the carb for it to gravity feed the gas to the carb. Of course, you will have to suck on the line first to get the flow started before connecting the line to the carb.
But first, you will have to block off the fuel line that was originally connected to the carb so it will not spray fuel everywhere (assuming the pumps are still working).
If you are unsure or not comfortable trying this then DON'T DO IT.

Thanks for the reply, I’m not that skilled but I’ll run that by my buddy next time he’s up here. I’m trying to find some local mobile guy that is somewhat familiar with these carbs as I know there’s a couple issues there. Not the starting though that happened while it sat. Still can’t confirm there’s an in tank pump. Fuse box labels have faded over the years even garaged.
