DPS Seeks Suspect in Fatal Hit-and-Run on I-10

To re-cap, shortly before noon sunday morning (5/17/09), Heather was run off I-10 and killed by some tard without the decency to stop. The suspect red four-door sedan was last seen heading westbound on I-10 in the direction of Tucson. The only witness who has come forth, fortunately or unfortunately, did not follow the fleeing vehicle, but instead stopped and pulled Jayden out of the wreckage.
Small corrections: The paint transfer would actually be a bit more of a metallic brown than gray. Heather always wore her seatbelt when she was driving... we're assuming it suffered a catastrophic failure pending autopsy results.
Heather was a close friend of mine, and my best friend's wife. I know the description of the vehicle is all but useless, but just in case, if anyone sees this guy, or knows or hears anything, please don't let him get away with this.
SIERRA VISTA — The woman who was killed in a late Sunday morning accident near Benson has been identified as 28-year-old Heather Portz, formerly of Sierra Vista, a spokeswoman for the Arizona Department of Public Safety said Monday.
Unhurt in the hit and run accident was her 2-year-old son Jayden, Officer Joy Craig said.
It was slightly before noon, when a man driving a four-door red compact struck the gray 2000 Jeep Cherokee on Interstate 10, near milepost 302, Craig said.
Both vehicles were heading west, toward Tucson when the incident occurred. After Portz’s vehicle was struck, it rolled into the median ejecting the woman who was not wearing a seatbelt, the DPS officer said.
The boy was properly protected in a car seat and was not injured, Craig said.
Portz was declared dead at the Benson hospital.
Her son was released to his grandmother who lives in Sierra Vista.
Craig said the deceased woman had identification that indicated she lived in Sierra Vista and Tucson.
A relative said she, her husband and child had moved to Tucson about five months ago.
The DPS officer said the department is seeking the vehicle that struck Portz’s jeep, noting it will have gray paint transferred from the Cherokee on its rear quarter-panel.
While there is no description of the driver being sought, except he was white and was wearing a baseball cap, Craig said any information that can be provided concerning the accident will be appreciated.
Anyone with information concerning the driver of the hit and run vehicle is asked to call the Arizona Department of Public Safety duty office at (602) 223-2212.
If the immediate location of the suspect vehicle is known, individuals are asked to call 911. All phone calls can be made anonymously.
