Smog Law Attempt

Hey Fellow 3rd Gen members

I would like to ask the moderator to make this a sticky for a few weeks so everyone can read it. It deals with smog emissions testing and older vehicles.

This is an update of the one I sent a week or two ago.
Included with this copy is the letter for you to send to the two person’s listed below.
I figure if I included a letter that is already formatted to say what it is supposed to say, then more people would participate and send it in. Don’t let them get away with this guy’s! The document is on the last page of this document.

Smog Emissions Testing and Older Vehicles
· The present law requires all vehicles 30 years old and newer to be tested for smog emissions. That's fair.
· The proposed new law requires all cars regardless of age to be tested for smog emissions. That's not fair!

Please help me and other older car owners. Copy the message at the end of this the message and send it to the two people listed below:
· Assemblywoman Sally Lieber: Assemblywoman.Lieber@assembly.ca.gov Sally is the "Assemblywoman" that's proposing this bill. Not good, we need to tell her so!
· Steve McDonald: stevem@sema.org Steve works for SEMA (Specialty Equipment Manufacturing Association: Represents SEMA in the U.S. congress as a 'lobbyist'. Steve is our friend, understands our hobby, he's on 'our side'.
Lets get this bill defeated, before it’s to late!

Thanks for your help.

Joe Shawn

Message to the State of California:
California's current emissions testing exemption recognizes the
minimal impact of vehicles 30-years old and older on vehicle
emissions and air quality.

Vehicles 30-years old and older make up only a small portion of the overall vehicle population and are a poor source from which to look for emissions reduction.

Antique and classic vehicles are overwhelmingly well-maintained and infrequently driven: Less than one-third the miles each year as a new vehicle.

Legislators and regulators are feeling the heat from a failed effort
to meet air quality goals and are looking for a convenient scapegoat.

The old car hobby should not carry the burden of their mistakes!

Legislation to Repeal Old Car Emissions Exemption Reintroduced in California State Assembly - February 2004

URGENT LEGISLATIVE ALERT

Here we go again! As predicted, legislation has been reintroduced in the California Assembly to repeal the state’s current rolling emissions test exemption for vehicles 30 years old and older. A.B. 2683 would repeal the current pro-hobbyist exemption and replace it with a provision requiring the permanent testing of all 1976 and newer model vehicles. This year, the bill was introduced by California State Assemblywoman Sally Lieber (D-District 22).

We Urge You to Contact Assemblywoman Lieber and Your Own State Assembly Member Immediately to Oppose A.B. 2683

* Existing law in California exempts all vehicles 30-years old and older from emissions testing.
* California’s current emissions testing exemption recognizes the minimal impact of vehicles 30-years old and older on vehicle emissions and air quality.

Contact your State Assembly Member to oppose A.B. 2683. Assemblywoman Lieber can be reached by e-mail at Assemblywoman.Lieber@assembly.ca.gov To find out who your own State Assembly Member is, contact the California Assembly’s general information line at 916/445-4311. This information can also be accessed via the Internet at http://www.enjoythedrive.com/legisla...legislator.asp or by calling the SEMA Washington, DC office at 202-783-6007, ext. 38. IMPORTANT UPDATE! SEMA California Legislative Alert: Emissions Exemption Repeal Bill Sponsor Refuses to Back Down

URGENT LEGISLATIVE ALERT (Important Update)

Emissions Exemption Repeal Bill Sponsor Refuses to Back Down

Despite the thousands of e-mail messages that have been generated against the California bill (A.B. 2683) that would repeal the state's current
rolling emissions test exemption for vehicles 30 years old and older, the bill's sponsor has decided not to withdraw the measure. As you are aware, A.B.
2683 would repeal the current pro-hobbyist exemption and replace it with a law requiring the permanent testing of all 1976 and newer model vehicles. The
bill's sponsor is California State Assemblywoman Sally Lieber (D-District 22). She seems not to understand that this bill has ramifications for all California
hobbyists, not just those who live in her District. Let's make sure our message is getting through!

We Urge You to Call Assemblywoman Lieber Immediately to Oppose A.B. 2683

Her Telephone Number is: 916/319-2022

The only problem I have with this, is those '72 and older car guys have been looking down their nose at us newer car owners for as long as I can remember, for various reasons, including they dont have to smog. It'd be nice for them to get a taste of crow.

But I know if this law passes it hurts us just as much as it does them.
