Has anyone done an electric motor conversion?
Has anyone done an electric motor conversion?
Hey guys. I have been doing some research on electric motor conversions. They say they don't polute and the high performance electric motors can out some of the gas engines. Has anyone converted their 3rd Gen Camaro to an electric car? If not, what do you guys think of electric cars? Do you hate them or like them? Please feel free to post and share your comments on the electric car. Oh look up this website www.nedra.com. It's the National Electric Drag Racing Association. Let me what you think.
Re: Has anyone done an electric motor conversion?
Most of our cars are used as daily drivers or for weekend cruises. When we cruise, we often will travel 300 miles or more including the distance to and from our cruising location. We would be near the limit of an electric car's range with no place to plug in for a recharge. The second problem with electrics for the home builder is that conventional batteries add so much weight and mass that the electric motors won't be able to match the gas motors. A battery system like the Tesla uses might work, but it and the technology needed to utilize them is probably beyond the abilities of most home builders. Finally, the cost of the batteries needed, plus the cost of replacement for the batteries would more than equal the cost of the car probably every 3-5 years on average. We have one member with a hybrid Chevy pick up, but that is as close as anyone hase come to an electric on this board to my knowledge.

This so-called 'green' state is going to drive the world right into an environmental mess. From the production of the batteries (hazardous nickel production waste), to the disposal of them (see production), the production of the power to run the car (generally a coal fired powerplant), and the aforementioned range or lack thereof, an electric car makes no sense. Great for California, all those items above are NIMBY (Not In My Back Yard) so its clean here and highly polluting elsewhere... at levels above what a good gasoline engine car would pollute here. Thats the problem with this place, ignorance is bliss. I guess when people figure out energy isnt free, that the world and the atmosphere isnt our toilet no matter where you are, then things will change. Until then we'll have a bunch of useless banter by the uninformed quoting statements by people either less informed than they are or trying to brainwash the suckers.

Why would anyone expect someone from California to think energy isn't free? Ask the typical Southern Californian where water comes from and they will tell you "out of the faucet."

I design electric / hybrid vehicles for a living and I would never convert my vehicle to electric! Waaaay to much work and $$ to do it right.

I once saw a electric powered 82-84 trans am at phoenix international raceway. This was many years ago, probably right around 1990 or so. Was kinda funny hearing it zip by and no exhaust sound .... Perhaps someone from the phoenix area knows more about this car. I saw it do quite a few laps probably running around 80mph or so. Pretty cool car though wonder if it is still around.
Kinda sounded like that fake turbine sound they used on knight rider LOL.
