Need help in a major way

I have an 89' IROCZ 5.7 TPI, and the problem is that when I start it, it idles irratically and when I go to give it gas it shuts off. After doing this for a couple of minutes it will finally idle right and it stays on. This is my daily driver so any help would be greatly appreciated as I need to get this resolved asap.

Re: Need help in a major way

Funny thing happened, it started right up with no problems without unplugging the MAF. But it's not the first time it does this to me. It happened last week too. The only thing is that I don't have the obd2 scan/reader. I was going to buy one but it didn't have the right connector. Has anyone else had this problem? By the way, thanks godsreject for the info. I will definately keep that in mind if it happens again.

Re: Need help in a major way

if it is an 89 you may have map sen instead of maf sen. you should have 2 sen 1 under intake plen. that one is intake air sen, also next to therm housing you have coolant sen.if either are out of them are defective it fools the ecm. they are really the same sensors just in different use. they only cost around 12 bucks. good luck. it sounds like it might be a simple fix.

Re: Need help in a major way

No, all 89 TPI V8's have MAF sensors. MAP didnt start until 1990 model years.

It does sound like you have a bad sensor or an intermittent short in one of the wires. Without a scan tool its hard to tell which one. One other test you can try is get an OHM meter and measure the resistance of the injectors. They should be around 14-16 ohms when cold and more than 12 ohms when warm. If any are less than 12 ohms they're bad.

Re: Need help in a major way

My '89 is doing the same exact thing!! The warmer the car is the more it happens. If it sits for a couple of days the problem goes away but comes back after three or four starts.

Did you check your injectors as I described?

No, I haven't been able to get a hold of an ohm meter, and $$$ is kind of tight right now so I can't go to a shop either.

Re: Need help in a major way

You can buy a cheap digital ohm meter for under $10.00 at Radio Shack, or Harbor Freight.
