SC3G 3rd Generation F Body Shootout Irwindale Speedway Thursday June 20, 2013 @ 4PM
The SC3G 3rd Generation F Body Shootout will held at:
Irwindale Drag Strip
500 Speedway Drive
Irwindale, CA 91706
(626) 358-1100
Irwindale Speedway
Originally I had intended for this to be a standalone event that would take place on either a Saturday or a Sunday. However, after several attempts to negotiate with Irwindale Speedway it was clear that it wasn’t going to happen without having to increase the size of the event by opening it up and integrating late model muscle. Which I really wasn't interested in...
As a result, this event will be incorporated into the regular Thursday Nights T-N-T
This is event is designed to bring 3rd Generation F Body enthusiasts both experienced and inexperienced together for an evening at the drag races.
Seasoned drag race veterans can knock the cobwebs off the old drag radials, hit the bleach box, and show everyone how it’s done. …and those that have always wanted to make a couple passes with their 3rd gen but never knew who, what, when, where, or how… This is your opportunity to make it happen!
We will have several experienced drag race veterans that will be available to you for any questions you might have about taking your car down the track for the first time and later, tips & tricks on what you can do as a driver to lower your ET.
The track opens at 4PM for tech and racing usually starts a little before 5 which is why I recommend that everyone that is planning on running their car be there a little before 4. I have found that the sooner you get your car tech'd and moved into the staging lanes. The more passes you will be able to make over the course of the evening.
Detailed information about this event will be provided as we get closer to the date...
For now, here are the basics:
$20 to race
$10 spectator
$5 for Kids 6-12
Kids 5 and under are free
Parking is free
I will get into the specifics of tech inspection, helmets, and pits in the coming days...
As always if you have any questions, comments, or to RSVP please feel free to contact me
Call/Text – 714-713-0768

Re: SC3G 3rd Generation F Body Shootout Irwindale Speedway Thursday June 20, 2013 @ 4
I've received a number of PM's inquiring to whether or not we will be having a meeting/clinic prior to this event to go over the basic fundamentals of drag racing (how the tree works, what the lights mean, what a 60' is, what an ET is, etc...) There are a couple of people that are concerned about looking foolish and/or possibly doing something wrong when drag racing for the first time.
...and truth be told is all it's going to take is one smokey little peg leg burnout past the staging lights to get publicly humiliated over the PA to completely turn someone off to the sport and loose interest forever. Not something I want to see happen, especially when it can all be avoided by getting together for a quick clinic on the do's and don'ts of drag racing beforehand.
So if you would like to attend, please feel free to sign up on our SC3G Facebook Event Page

Donno maybe you will have to go there to find out what shows up. We can be gone for like a year ago talking about what we have done to our 3rdgens. Back in the day I had a great topic that was fun. What have you done to your 3rdgen lately. I have not done anything. I did how ever buy an Infiniti 4x4. Glad I put money towards buying that rather than finishing my front end rebuild an other lists of upgrades. I need a water pump. And I could have had the car running for the passed year but I just have not put on the parts I bought an I have not done anything with the water pump. I was told I can get my Alum edelcrock crap rebuilt.
Sounds like a fun event. But in the end hp doesnt matter in the event as Mike has stated. Ya Dig.

Based on the feedback I've received, it's looking like we're going to have a little bit of everything represented. TPI, LSX, TBI, V6, powered vehicles will be lining up and making passes.

Irwindale Dragstrip Rules & Regulations are governed by the 2013 NHRA Rulebook

Racers competing with cars quicker than 8.59 (1/8 mile) are required to wear an approved helmet (See NHRA Rulebook). No passengers are allowed in vehicles faster than 8.59. (An 8.59 1/8th mile time roughly translates to about a 13.4X ¼ mile time)
Trailer Rules: Cars may be brought in by trailer, but must be removed prior to tech inspection. Tech inspection cannot be performed with a vehicle on/in a trailer.
Wheel Studs: All cars must possess the required number of wheel studs and have a lug nut on each stud.
Convertible Cars: All convertible cars must have the top up to race the vehicle or provide the driver with the approved arm restraints.

I have this helmet I use on my street bike, would it be an "approved" one?

Should I even worry about brining it? (see mods in sig)

Re: SC3G 3rd Generation F Body Shootout Irwindale Speedway Thursday June 20, 2013 @ 4
This bastardized Camaro in the driveway should be ready to run. I hope it can keep up with those high HP TPI builds

i might even get a new personal best after my tech(TPITERR) swaps out the 3.08 gears for these 3.73's....

Alright guys, today is the day! We have 19 cars confirmed with the possibility of a few more showing. With a considerable 3rd gen contingency on deck, this should make for quite the spectacle out at the track tonight.
Again, if you aren't comfortable making a few passes or your car is down for repairs. I'd like to still encourage you to come out to the track tonight and support your fellow 3rd gen enthusiasts.
...and if you are planning on running this evening... Please refer to my post #21 in this thread to verify that all of the criteria for tech/attire is met before coming out this evening.
I will set up a large pit area for everyone which should be conspicuous based on all of the 3rd gens that will be in the area. However, if we all happen to be in the staging lanes when you get there... Simply look for our SC3G Club Banner and park near by. Let's make it a good one!
Just a reminder... SC3G Club Decals can be purchased exclusively through WatsonStickers.com

Amazing turnout last night guys! Thanks to everyone that came out and supported our 3rd gen f body shootout. Between running around and making a handful of passes, I didn't have a chance to take any pics or record any video. Not to worry, there were plenty of cameras present and we will get all of those images/videos up as soon as we can for everyone to enjoy. Well done everyone!

Good times at the track. Was trying out my new set up but only got 2 runs in.
My "*****-out run" only netted a 7.9 after I had to lift and steer away from the wall.

Squeezing in some dyno time with the new mods before Test n Tune.

Gotta love that LSx power. First dyno is back when it had the 224 cam and stock heads. New numbers should get me into the mid to low 7's.

It's easy to talk from the sidelines. SoCal's fastest TPI's didn't even show. I'm pretty sure it was the LSx powered 3rd gens running the fastest times
Either way, I didn't build my car to impress some has-been. Thanks for reminding me why I stopped posting in this section, I'm going to keep running my car while you keep running your mouth

Vincent was running a 7.9 with a Vette Super Ram not a Mini Ram. That Mini ram was a huge mistake in my book. Now maybe with his all new 388ci it will make up for that loss he took using the mini ram. Vincent likes Hp.

God dam theres so much hate over these new Lsx power plants. Look it's not good news for the future of these older motors. If there going a newer direction then just take it like it is. Just a better option these days. Alright so were all running 7.9's. I wouldnt run my vehicle unless I had some major changes. Not worth it to just keep racing an racing. How about rather then time slips, why dont we just count the miles instead. The 1/8 is the hardest race, not the 1/4 the 1/8 a lot less time there so any bad 60' or bad reaction times really changes the play. You go out there for the fun so just have fun with the footage an clips. Cant wait to see them. Deep Staged 8.0 run for me is my best an with an Auto to. Thought these manuals would do better. One question at the near of the track how in the world are you about to hit the wall?
I don't understand the hate but the backyard built LSx guys must be doing something right

My first test run was a 8.0@89 shifting at 5800~rpm getting use to the new power.
The 2nd pass I shifted at 6500 and the shift somehow kicked me out to the left of the groove. I lifted a bit and had to counter steer it the rest of the way. Someone should have the footage.
I'll be working on my 60ft to get it from 1.8's to 1.5-1.6's. Most important to me was the 92mph trap despite it not being a clean pass

What's been your best Rt with that plant? That seems a lil slow on the get go on that slip
