Suspension and Chassis Questions about your suspension? Need chassis advice?

Is this a bad idea?

Is this a bad idea?

I spoke w/ Steve from Spohn Preformance and he told me that he is booked for a while with installs. If I get the cage from him would it be a bad idea to go to another guy to get it installed. Namely Bill from ZratedMotorsports in New Jersey. Bill is helping me with suspension on my car but the cage I will be getting from Spohn is about $125 cheaper then if I was to get a 6 point cage from Zrated. I really don't know what to do. If I had a Welder I would do it myself but I don't so I need help. If anyone can give some advice it would be cool.

If you trust Bill to do your suspension mods why not have him install the cage.

Is his cage the same as spoons?

Will he blame a poor job on the cage if it is not his tubes?

Will he charge you more to install someone elses kit?

Will you hurt his feelings and make him mad?

Do they bend their own tubes for the cage?

Are the cages DOM, Chrome Moly or seamed tube? Are you comparing Apples to Apples?

I dont know the answer to these questions.

I would ask what material the cage is and then ask if he can weld it. Different steels have different welding requirements or techniques and the wrong welding rod (tig) or wong wire (mig) can make the cage unsafe.

ie. if the rod thake more heat to melt than the tube the tube near the weld will lose its strength as the high heat resets the molecules in the steel. I MAY lose its temper and MAY become soft. The cage could then form a weak point next to the weld. NOt good. If the rod or wire melts before the steel, you do not get a weld but a braze. Not good.

This is why compentent body shops use a special heat sensitive crayon when welding high strength steel. A lighweight but strong steel in unibody chasisis. If the repair is made incorrectly ie too much heat to bend the wrecked chasis the car will fold like a can if it is ever in another wreck.

Ask around and determine what the cages are made of and what techniques they use to weld. Determine how it will attach to your sub frame and the compatibility of the metals. I KNOW I AM being overly cautious and **** about this. But you did ask.

If these guy know there stuff this should be no problem.

The thing is I could get either the Mild Steel or Chrome Moly from either place. It just seems that Spohn is a lil cheaper, but then again I haven't asked Bill at Zrated how much everything will be. Then again I know if I wanted to keep a good reputation if I had someone bring someone else products to my shop I would be happy to install it for them. Ah who knows I guess I will see when 2 weeks comes to have everything put in.

You could just tell him you got a good deal on it and wanted him to install it.
