My 91 Firebird L03 came with a quick-ratio steering box.

I replaced it with a quick ratio box (with the z on the side) about a year a go. I damaged it recently, and when I pulled the old one out, I found it to be the same box. The cars been in the family since new, so I know its never been changed. Ever heard of this?

i was gonna ask a question bout that topic too. I have the regular 90 airbag steering wheel....from the left turn stop to the right i have to turn my s wheel almost exactly 2 1/2 revolutions. Is that the regular s box? 90 RS. Is there an rpo code 4 that feature?

Just look on top of the box for a "Z" cast into it. The casting number ends in something like 525 I believe.

RS cars that came with the L03 and the 16" wheels also got the Z/28's quick-ratio steering and I believe bigger sway-bars that came with the Z/28's. My RS came with the 16" wheels and it turns lock to lock in 2 1/4 turns.

I don't get. I just got a steering box off my friend from his 85' IROC to replace the steering box on my 92 RS because I wanted a quick ratio box. Well after seeing this post I ran out to the garage to see if his box was really a quick ratio box, and guess what! It's not! But do you know what it?! My stock one! Has the Z stamped into it and has the 525 in the end of the #. I know for sure they arn't mixed up because mine still had the steering pump attached to it and it's really greasy and his isn't. Weird find eh?

What's even weirder is that my project car, a 91 Firebird V6, has the quick ratio box. The guy I bought it from was the original owner and has never changed it.

quick ratio vs steering stops

juist a thought, the earlier z28's came with 215/65/15's not 245/50/16's and if i remember the bigger tire rub in the older cars because the internal stops in the box let the wheels turn too far. Is it possible that the ratio of the 2.5 and 2.25 turns lock to lock boxes are the same and the travel is whats adding the extra .25 turn??

ohh....so thats the difference in the quick ratio box..... a 1/4 turn of the S. wheel? That dosent seem like that big of a difference.

I believe there are the two ratios, but the ones that came with 16" wheels have different stops.
My 92 RS also came with F41 Suspension and 16" wheels, and has the Z28 hi ratio box., code XH stamped on the cover.
