Questions about the panhard bar brace

I've seen a few pictures of 3rd and 4th gens lately with custom exhaust setups. Some had removed the panhard bar brace for clearance purposes. Doesn't the brace just connect the two sides of the subframe? And once removed, does it affect vehicle handling or performance negatively? I'm thinking about going to a true dual setup soon and the removal of the brace would make it possible. If the brace is NEEDED for subframe support, couldn't you just remove it and weld in a bar closer to the floorpan of the car?

they keep the rearend centerd the coils and torque arm alone cant keep rearend from sliding sideways, these cars dont have LCA's and such like the full size cars do to keep rear end in place, the old 63-72 GM trucks with coilsd used a single round steel solid panhard bar to keep rearend centered. they considered to be three link setups factory, lower long trailing arms from center of chassi back to under axle tubes and then the panhard bar, nascar minitrucks do this currently

id keep the bars unless you put some kind of other bard under to keep rear end centered

good luck

Marc 85Z28 was asking about the "panhard rod brace" and not the "panhard rod". They are two separate pieces.

No I would not advice the permanant removal of this under any circumstance. Theybrace does box the rear chassis, and also mainly it adds support to the long chassis drop mount for the panhard rod. From the looks of this bracket mount - it will most likely bend under hard force- GM engineers supply braces and such for specific reasons- because they feel it needs it.

I dont think an engineer would design a part to be fitted on a production assembly line car for no reason- what do you think?

AGood2.8 - I agree that it is there for a reason, but mainly was wondering if I could just weld up a bar from subrame rail to subrame rail to compensate for removing the brace... Not only is the factory piece weak stamped steel, but it's also pre-bent - If it was REALLY necessary, wouldn't they have designed it a little better?
