Rear of car vibrates when braking...

I just picked up a stock '86 Camaro and I noticed that everytime I brake, the rear of the car vibrates very noticably. My mechanic just said that it will need new brake pads in about 5k miles, but that doesn't really explain the extreme vibration. Any ideas?

I would check out the suspension parts, but your sig says it has under 40k miles so I dont think the parts are worn out. It could be that you need new pads. Does it vibrate at high speeds as well? Or only when you brake?

Braking vibration/shake is usually warped brake rotors(if you have rear disks). You will need pads as well.

I would agree that it sounds like the rear rotors or drums depending on what you have. It is possible that if they are drums that someone over adjusted them at one point causing excessive heat when braking and they warped.
Good luck!

Thanks everyone for responding so quickly! I believe the rears are drum brakes. Also, it only vibrates when coming to a stop, not at high speeds.

How much of a pain would it be to swap to disc brakes in the rear?

Hey Jamirobri, that's puzzling. Don't know everything about brakes, but didn't think drums could warp. I would take it to a good shop, and have it checked out. My car was shaking in the front, so I took it in, got my rotors machined, back brakes done, and a new idler arm, now the car steers and stops like new.

Probably a back brake job will fix whatever it is. Wheel bearing maybe?

Have seen rear disc brake kits, don't know it they work for our cars. Also, people swap in the GTA (and IROC?) rearend, which has better gears and disc brakes on it. That's what I want to do. Oh yeah, people put on the 4th gen rear too. Good luck.
