My '86 has a 34mm front bar. Can't remember what the rear bar is.
Just take an open-ended adjustable wrench, and tighten it down on the center of the front or the rear bar. Loosen it SLIGHTLY so you can slide the wrench off, and measure the gap of the wrench with a ruler.
Remember not to start measuring with the end of the ruler- rulers aren't too accurate on their ends- the ends usually get damaged or worn down. Start measuring at the 1 cm mark.
