rear disc caliper removal
rear disc caliper removal
Could someone quickly tell me how to remove the rear calipers on my '87 trans am please. I have never attempted it before and don't want to screw anything up. I especially don't know what to do with E-brake cable. Thanks.

Easiest way to get the e-brake cable off is to loosen it up from the adjuster located in the tranny tunnel. This will give you the extra play you need to get the cable off the caliper. To remove the caliper, remove the (2) 3/8" allen headed bolts holding it onto the backing plate.

To remove the rear passenger caliper, you'll have to unbolt the lower control arm at the axle. The lower caliper mounting bolt is blocked by the control arm. Remember to torque that control arm bolt back to spec when you put the car together again, and to check the torque a few days later. You don't want to lose that control arm bolt because of improper torque!!
And be careful; if they haven't been removed in a long time, the tube nuts of the brake line could be rusted solid to the brake line. That means you think you'll be twisting the tube nut loose, but you're really twisting the whole damn tube, and SNAP! The end of the tube will snap off.
http://www.classictube.com sells the rear axle hard lines as a kit. They even make them in stainless; I'll be changing mine out for the stainless this summer. I've snapped too many tube nuts back there to keep screwing with them!

One other suggestion- hose all the bolts, nuts, line nuts, and bleeder screws with penetrating oil several times in the days before you start to dis-assemble the brakes and stuff will come apart much easier.
