What's up with my torque arm?

Ok so I've noticed recently that when I hit the brakes with a moderate pressure and let off quickly, or hit a bump just right, I feel and hear a clank from underneath the car. I knew it wasn't exhaust so I was confused.

This weekend I was installing my SFC's and noticed that the torque arm is sitting loosely in a rubber rectangle that come off of the transmission. I could move the transmission end of the arm up and down at least an inch. Totally loose. I'm assuming the "clank" was my torque arm.

Now, I don't know how a torque arm is supposed to work, or be connected, or whatever. I know it's an important traction/suspension component but I have no idea what it does specifically or how it does it.

So how is it supposed to be connected under there, and should it have any play in it? I'm guessing I need a new rubber mount for the front part or something. Thanks.

Hey.

That sounds like the TA mount. They are easy to get from several sites. Try the vendors here. Jegs/Summit has the parts as well. Just crawl under the car and determine which way the lip on the TA faces, and order accordingly.

HTH, peace

It should have no play.

The clamp thing that holds the rubber bushing may be loose. There's 3 bolts that hold it on to the trans, the top one holds the 2 halves together.

If it's all fully assembled, you probably need the rubber bushing. You can get a poly one which is much better.

Would a poly one make the ride harsher or anything? Where can I get one?

Ok looking at this page from Summit here:Torque arm mount

Should I get the one that faces toward or away from the driveshaft? I dont see why there are two choices. Will both work?

No, you'll need to look at your stock torque arm and compare it to the pics at the bottom of this page:

Oh hey Steve, I didn't know you carried them. I'll look under the car and order one from you soon. Thanks.
