strut tower bearing

I'v got a popping sound comming from my front end, and I'm pretty sure its the strut tower bearing.... how would I go about checking this?? And if it's bad, it's needed to replce the entire strut tower assembly correct?? On my next day off I'll be installing sportlines and Kyb GR2's so I figured this would be a good time to take care of this also.

thanks, scott

Should you decide to replace, note the following thread:

Does Spohn make the retainer plates for the Moog mounts now? Steve said in the thread that he'd make them, but nobody responded.

if your car has a good amount of miles on it, odds are theyre going to need to be replace. if you want to test them, stick your finger in there, and turn it. if theres any up/down or side to side play, or if theyre hard to turn or feel rough, they need to be replaced

I'm not sure which to do, i'll probably do both...

I thought about just switching to the later retainers, and using the moog bearing plates.

then i saw what steve said, and thought maybe i'd send him the old retainers and plates, to see if he can make us a strut tower bearing set for the older cars.

or, i could do both. change my retainers to the newer ones, and use the moog plates for now, but then send my take offs to steve, and see what he can do. what do you think, CaysE?

Yes, Spohn has had those in the site for a while now. I assume the billet mounts have the same issue with older cars and the retainers.

Steve wasn't going to make different mounts, he was offering to make the newer-style retainers so we have somewhere to get them from. If you have a newer set of retainers, give Steve a call and see what you can work out.
