CAN ANYONE TELL ME WHY THE REAR DISC BRAKE PADS ON MY 1988 TRANS AM RATTLE? I UNDERSTAND THAT THIS YEAR USES A "FLOATING" BRAKE PAD SETUP BUT IT JUST SHOULDN'T MAKE THIS MUCH NOISE. THE PADS APPEAR TO BE WAY TOO LOOSE ON THE CALIPER. THANX!

 

Do you ever use your parking brake?

 

I recently went through something like this on my '88 GTA.

Turned out to be the metal part of the pad (that rides against the caliper) had wore just enough to have some slack between the metal part and the caliper (front to rear) and it had a click-click type sound as the pad bounced forward and backwards at the worn spot.

I measured the difference at .080 (eighty-thousandths) and evidently that was enough to be noisy.

To temporarily check my theory, I spot welded a little tip at the worn spot on the metal part of the brake pad and filed it to fit within .005.

No more noise.

Then new pads.

ive herd that you have to apply the parkign break every now and then because it adjusts the back breaks soem how or another... not sure about this but i know i herd that soem ware.
