another annoying topic for you guys (popping)
before anyone yells at me , i have searched okay. I have been getting this real bad pop in my car for about two months now. At first it would only happen when i launch hard but now i hear it when i am slowing down or just crusing at low speeds. . I checked tranny mount and little square rubber bushing, its all there and in good shape. I have checked for any type of play in the front suspension. I have lifted the wheels off the ground and grabed the 3 and 9 to see if there is any play. I do see movement in just about everything from the center link to tie rod. BUT i am guessing this is due to the play in the actual steering box. The tie rods do not have any slack BUT they do twist rather easily. Are they suppose to twist at all? I have checked the ball joints by putting my jack under the tire and lifting it to see if i see any vertical movement in the ball joint.( of course while the car on jackstands). I do not see any slack. I also grabbed the 12 and 6 position on the tire and there is no movement at all. i have replaced wheel beerings. I just did my calipers and hoses and pads a few weeks ago. Greesed everything up so it cant be that , No the clip isnt off the pad either i even bought new ones (old ones came off to easily). I am running out of ideas here , my struts are shot , kyb of course
. Would it be my tie rods causing this? i can hear it on both sides

Sorry to hijack the thread, but I get popping too. However, mine only happens near full lock.
I looked at the k member an thought those bolts haven't been moved in years. Anyway, out came the torque wrench. YEP! They moved all the way to 120 ftlb.
Hmm. still get popping though..
Cheers
Mark.

yeh the only way to take care of this is a front suspension rebuild.. I was told one time the upper strut mounts , but then again i feel it by the flooor board.
no one really answered my questions about the tie rods. Are they suppose to twist easily?

tie rods are fine they are suposed to twist at the ball. it should be tight at the bolt through the spindle mount. but twist is ok.
did any of you check your steering box mount? you know where it mounts to the frame..this is a comon breaking point that will give you that creak or pop sound when broken. drop the box and look at the frame it may be cracked there. take it to a good welder and have it plated and you;ll be good to go.

can u see if its broken without dropping the box? i see nothing if so. I hear it more on my pass side though. When i launch hard i can hear it and then i hear it again when i let go of the gas.. like if something gets stuck up then falls

How are your trans mounts? Those went bad with a buddies camaro and made noise at takeoff and braking etc...

My car used to have a popping noise during slow bumps and turning mine turned out to be the steerings idler arm
replace the trans mount. My Camaro did the same thing, at first it only did it at hard acceleration and hard braking, but then it started to get worse, then it started to make the noise on every bump I hit, I checked the trans mount but the trans mount LOOKED fine, I figured what the hell there only 10 dollars, I replaced it and the noise has stopped.

I had a transmount go bad where the rubber physcially seperated from the metal part of the mount. I lifted the car up and it "looked" ok. It was more of a clunk than a pop and you could feel it in the gear shifter. It got so bad that on acceleration the gear shifter would raise up and then go back down. So i raised the car again and dropped the tranny mount and support and the metal part of the mount moved while the rubber part was still stuck to the tranny. Also make sure your bolts that secure the tranny to the support are torqued to specs.
I noticed that when i get out of the car sometimes, or when i rock the body in the front i hear a creaking, sharp clunk. I think its coming from the bushings in the lower control arm.
The other thing i had go bad was a strut, the car wouldnt handle right and it would make a clunking/rattling sound at the wheel, and when i pulled the strut off all the nitrogen gas had come out of it, the only thing holding the car up was the spring.

Strut Mount
These cars are not getting younger. The aging, and in my hot climate, dry rotting suspension rubber is as much a victim as yankee cars are to rust. Several years ago i suffered from similar popping, after looking through and replacing several bushings I came to replace the strut mounts. I had only wished i had done it sooner because it greatly reduced popping. During my inspections at that time i found that my "frame" too was cracked and was causing the sound. After some upside down welding the car does not sound like the clunker some believe these cars to be.
I really reccomend replacing the strut mounts to everyone, while i was in there i threw in a new set of struts, and with everything else done gave my car a much better feel.
