rear end number confufion

Axle/Gears: 3:08
rear end number confufion

i looked up my rear numbers in a haynes manual and it said my rear was from a 1988-89...would this be correct or did someone swap rears....the axle code is...6HK...3.08 std is in the book for it

Axle/Gears: Ford 9"/31 spline spool/4.86
Chances are the housing is from 88-89 but that doesn't mean the insides are. Pull the rear cover and see what carrier is inside. Count the teeth to see what gear ratio it is.

You might have a 1989 housing with the 1992 28 spline axles installed into a posi with 3.73 gears.

On the other hand maybe someone broke the original diff and just yanked the first one they found at the auto wrecker and installed it.
