1991 Firebird Rear Axle

Hey, I got this probem, my rear axle pin is worn out right at the bearings, so it needs to be replaced to prevent nasty suprises. My machenic told me that the whole axle needs to be replaced, and it will cost me $700+. I ust want to ask if its a reasonable price for a used full axle. He says he gets only used parts under 50 miles. Also this is done in dealer ship though my dad, so they should throw down the labor.

I'm not sure what the axel "pin" is. Shaft? If the axel isn't worn too badly, you might consider off-set bearings. Axels from a bone yard could certainly be a possibility too. Seven hundred, if I understand your situation correctly and I'm not sure that I do, is completely over the top. This is something you and your father could do in an afternoon even if it's the complete rear end. Complete rear ends here in KS go from 2 to 4 hundred or so.

He must be doing well if all his parts have only 50 miles on them.
I assume hes getting them as they fall off the production line.
I got a complete low mileage [as in about 40k] for my T\A here in the UK, it cost me £200.
Twice what most UK cars would be [if any had back axles anymore] but beggars cant be choosers as T\A's are hardly on every street corner, be interesting to see the breakdown of that quote you have.

You can get a set of moser axles and a posi for the price he quoted you. I wouldn't let them touch my car if I were you.

Sorry I messed things up again. Its called the pinnion gear in the rear end differential. Its worn out so when you are driving the gears are pushed to gether so if driven too fast they will jam and as soon as you let go of the accel they will bind together and the axle locks up. The guy in the shop told me not to do any sharp turns or get on a hight way. I estimated that the axle would be about 400 the labor would be about 300 so it comes out to ~700. Right now I am looking for any one who's parting out 3rd gen rear axles in Texas San Anotnio.

IIRC, brand new gears can be had from Jeg's or Summit for $200+.
