Chrome Moly versus Mild Steel Roll Bar

Looking at roll bars...the 8 point offered by Spohn...the S&W I believe.

Chrome Moly = $600+
Mild Steel = $300+
with swing out kits and door handle clearances added in.

Considerable cost difference of Chrome Moly versus Mild Steel. Is the Chrome Moly worth the extra cost? How much weight savings is there? Is the strength the same for each once installed?

I won't be able to install myself. Anyone know an approximation of cost for a reputable shop to install?

Thanks

A lot. I got mine out of jegs and then called a race shop to put it in. They saud no way, they only use their own pipes. Then they said that just labor would be around 2 grand.....So I said F, U. And bought a welding book for 10 bucks, after I read it I went to a hardware store spent 200 on a welder and tought myslef and tossed in my 160 pipes from Jegs. Maybe 400 bucks all said and done, not to mention I know how to weld now. Do whatever you can yourself, your wallet will thank you.

i believe that chrome moly has to be tig welded. tig is alot harder that mig welding. i think chrome moly is lighter than mild steel, im not sure if it is stronger.

think about this chrome moly can be used down to a .083" wall thickness, and MS can be used down to a .118" wall thickness. Chrome moly and MS weigh the same, its just that chrome moly is stronger and requires less wall thickness. In order to get the cage NHRA certified you are going to need 6x6 plates where all the bars mount to the floor of the car. Chrome moly must also be TIG welded in, so unless you have experience in TIG welding than i would MIG weld the cage.
