Backspacing questions (not quite what you think)

As some of you might remember, there was a thread I started about a month ago floating around about widening stock rims. I found a place that does it locally along with repainting them for a pretty decent price. They only add backspacing due to the nature of the procedure (saw rim in half and extend the back half).

What's the stock 16x8 GTA rear rim backspacing and what would be considered a safe maximum backspacing? I'm only concerned with the rear; I plan to leave the front alone. I would like to go 16x10 or wider in the rear but I'm not sure how well the extra 2+ of backspacing will fit.

What's the furthest I can stretch them without having to perform a major hack job (preferably no hack job at all)? Rear end is a 9 bolt with PBR brakes if it matters.

Thanks all

The factory 16x8 mesh GTA wheels use a "0" offset on the front and +16mm in the rear. This gives a front backspace of 4.5" and rear backspace of about 5.25"

After driving a 3rd gen as a daily driver for 2 years, I'd have to agree with the response on your original post - I can see nothing but bad things from widening stock rims. I'm careful with mine - as much as I can be without running over large trees and small children, and I've hit small potholes (like everyone sooner or later does) and bent the hell out of my stock Camaro rims, and I'd be screwed if it wasn't for a parts car I bought - I've had to swap 2 rims in 2 years from not being able to avoid the small potholes - I would think that any modification would only weaken an already weak rim. In the end, I'd think the cost savings would be in spending for a well constructed set of rims that suits your desire.

I will have to do some measureing tomorrow, but if stock rear back spacing really is that close to 5" I don't have much room to stretch them.
