modifying upper strut mount
I was going to remove these from the car, and bring them into work to elongate the slots (mill) to get more adjustment out of them.
Can I just remove the 3 (?) adjusting bolts, and the 1 giant nut connecting it to the strut, then pull this off and walk away? or do I need to jack up the car or anything?

you will need to take the weight of the car off of the tire cause the strut mount is holding the tire strait up and down. if ya just undo the bolts without jacking up the car it will slam sideways on ya. i know i did it without asking for instructions or reading the repair manual. after that happened I put one jack under the kmember and lifted the whole car up then i used another smaller jack to take the spring pressure off of the strut mount and all it did is give me a bit of popup when the thing extended. after i installed the new one i was able to position it to the exact same place as it was origionaly by hand cause i outlined the whole thing so i could put it back exactly where it was. I dont know if that is the proper way to do it but thats how i did. didnt change the alighnment one bit but most likely i just got Lucky.

ok, thanks.
I'm having trouble holding the strut still (1/2" wrench) while I undo the big nut (13/16" socket, or since I have to hold the strut, crescent wrench).
Is there a better way? Leave the 3 9/16"AF nuts on while I remove the nut?

I used a pair of vice grips cliped really tight and a boxend wrench on the bolt. i broke that loose then i let the jack under the spring down to pull the strut loose then i jacked the thing back up so that the spring was not pulling on the strut. then i undid the three bolts switched the mount reused the bolt retainer and the kit i had had the rest new.

Impact gun.
Leaving the 3 smaller nuts on does help a lot too though while it's on the car.
