Removal of rear swaybar
Hey everyone,
I had a question for y'all. I was wondering if anyone had any knowledge on the removal of the rear swaybar for a drag only application. I am in the process of installing a 9" in my 88 Firebird and I don't think the U-bolts are big enough to go around the housing. I know you don't have to have one to drive, but I didn't know if removing it would affect my launch. I will have the Spohn adjustable torque arm and adjustable lower control arms. I will be running a set of M/T ET streets, 28x12.50, and launching the turbo 350 as high as the disc brakes will allow, hopefully near 4000 rpm.
My thinking is that as the car squats to launch, the swaybar will help pull the other side of the car down and help plant the power. Am I off base here?
Thanks,
Joe

For drag racing you want to have the rear sway bar in place, and the bigger the better. It helps to keep the rear of the car level at launch and therefore more weight on the driverside tire. Preloading one side is supposed to help also.

Thanks. That was what I was thinking, but I just wanted to verify.

Also, not to get off topic, but, are you using an adjustable panhard bar? I would recommend one. The first thing you want to do is have the rear sit "square" under the car. In order to launch straight, the rear has to be set straight. The factory bars will flex, and will cause the rear to be either a bit to the left, or right.
