I ran a 265/50/15 on the back of my 85 for about 3 years...I didnt have any problems with rubbing. The car handled pretty good(a little different to get used to in the rain)
On the front i was running a 225/50/15. thats about as big as i could get on the rim before i had tire rub in the fenderwell.
You will notice a difference in handling and how the car drives down the road. Here in ottawa some of our roads are pretty rutted and the car would tend to wander around in the ruts(no where nere as bad as my 84 with 275 or 255 on the front does) But in terms of performance driving(cornering and such) the wider tires with a shorter sidewall will add to performance. The shorter sidewall allows for less deflection in the tire so it will flex around less.

235/60/R15 is the same height as the stock tire. I have those in the front, no problems. It drags the plastic tire well insert sometimes, I think it's due to it being a 2nd gen wheel with a different offset.
275/60/R15's outback here. Others have done 275/60 on a 15x7" wheel as well, it's THE answer.

BTW, the look awesome and I get compliments all the time.
EDIT: My brain hiccupped, I have 255s, not 275s. They still look nice.

255/60/15 rears and 235/60/15 fronts.
Gives the car a nicer stance, rather than the whole front looking like it is a little higher than the rear, stance (on a stock suspension anyhow).
Thats the only combo I would run on my 15x7s

Currently I have a 215/60R15 on the front, and 245/60R15 on the back. Personally I wouldn't go wider than that on a 15x7 rim because the tire is barely bulging out on the sidewall, anything wider wouldn't look right.
Yes, the width of the rim WILL determine the widest tire you can run on there. It would be hard as hell to put a 295/50/15 on a 7" wide rim, and it would be stupid to.
I will be upgrading to 245/45R17 in the very near future. I could go wider on the back, probably like a 265/45, but I don't really need it.
The best reason for getting wider tires, is better traction. Now, it would be complete over kill if you had a 2.8 V6 in there, and stuck some 10" wide rims on the back with some 305's on there or something. Only go as wide as you need to, don't just go wide for looks. Function over form.

If I was to go by the function over form rule, I'd still have 215s all around.
I went 235 front, 255 front for better traction, but also because I like wide tires on sports cars. Although I agree with ling about going 10" wide rims with a 2.8L to be overkill.

I've got 255/60s all the way around. Fills the fenderwells nicely. I have a little fender rub on the front, but I only notice it when I'm trying to make very tight turns into a parking spot or something like that. Corners a heck of a lot better than the 195/70 14s that were on the car when I bought it. I'd recommend the 255 or even the 245/60.
