Eliminate P/S
Eliminate P/S
What would I need to do to eliminate the power steering from a 1991 Z Camaro? I don't want there to be slack or play after the pump is removed. How can I make it tight and responsive w/o the pump?
If I did keep the p/s, which pulley system set-up would you recommend? All I need is waterpump, power steering & alternator. Please provide part numbers because I will be ordering soon. Thanks

To eliminate your power steering, remove pump, hoses, brackets etc. Remove power steering box, remove pitman arm from power steering box. Install manual steering box from 84+ S10. Install third gen pitman arm onto manual box. Done.
Do a search. Some people have minor clearance issues with the manual box. You also may not like the manual steering box. It's 7 turns stop to stop so parking lot driving becomes difficult especially if you have a smaller steering wheel. The extra turns are required to increase the mechanical advantage since there's no power assist.
You want the S10 box with the 4 bolt top cover. The earlier 3 bolt top covers will work but the pitman arm shaft is smaller so you can't use the third gen's pitman arm. It's a slightly different length than the S10's.

Okay, i got ya. Now what about a pulley system with a power steering pump? I am using an older carbed sbc engine in a '91 z, but my buddy DOES want to keep the p/s. can you tell me which pulley set up to get (waterpump, alternator, p/s)

I don't use power steering or a SBC. My engine has 2 pulleys. One on the crank, one on the alternator using a 6 rib serpentine belt.
Pick something you like. There's lots of choices available. Converting to a serpentine belt is far better than the old V-belts. Serpentine doesn't mean you need a reverse direction water pump.
