Ball Joints-check

What is the best way to thoroughly check the condition of ball joinst while the A-arms are removied?

Jack the tire/wheel off the ground with the jack under the A-frame next to the ball joint, give the ball joint a shot of grease with the grease gun while watching it for movement. Or put a pry bar under the tire/wheel and pry it up looking for movement in the joint.
