Re: Manual rack kit

Do you want a manual rack or a manual steering box? Third gens don't have rack and pinion steering.

Re: Manual rack kit

Those rack and pinion kits are designed to be used with an aftermarket tubular k-member. I don't know if they can be adapted to a factory k-member.

Re: Manual rack kit

well you need to know which rack fits best. ask the manufacturer of the K member. If you can use a manual pinto or Mustang rack then summit has rebuilt ones for cheap!

Re: Manual rack kit

out of all the places, racecraft inc was most helpful, and solidifed my purchase with them.
pa racing and bmr also offer parts.

are you buidling a drag setup?
rack and pinion is the last straw for weight and space. not something you wanna do for a car you drive all the time, IMO.

Re: Manual rack kit

Thanks for sugestions, i'll ask at Spohn which one will fit, i'm not building drag, the target is to rebuild this old crap and sometime go on drag or drift, and for drift i need a bigger turning angle and here comes manual rack which should help.

Re: Manual rack kit

with a manual steering rack, it'll run into the first 2 primaries on the driver side. A custom header would have to be made to fix this.

Re: Manual rack kit

if you are going to drift, you DO NOT want a rack and pinion, and manaul makes it worse.
the wheel is going to come back at 200 mph and you wont be able to grab it when the wheel spins free. mechanical force at its best.
with power steeering, the pressure of the fluid eases the steering wheel back so you can catch it.
caution, so you know what you are getting into. you might not like the outcome.

thats the beauty of fabrication.
couple of steering joints and a steering brace and you can work around it, or re work the header.
it can be done.

Re: Manual rack kit

All the NASCAR drivers use power steering. Unless you're building a drag only car you'll always want power steering. The main reason for converting to manual steering is the weight loss. The second reason is to clean up the front of the engine by removing all the power steering hydraulic components.
