Chevy s10 rear end differential

I know this isnt a third gen question but I do have a third gen at least. LOL anyway.

I have a 93 s10 that I bought from a friend of mine and before he sold it he had the rear end replaced. He was unable to provide info on the rear end. He does know its out of another s10. I think it is out of a older s10.

Anyway my question is, is there anyway I can find out info on the differential from the numbers on the rear end housing. The numbers on the housing are 14030352 and has what I believe is HO14 7. And it has the letter "N" or "M" on it. From what I've found from searching the net is that the 7 is year so I'm guessing its from a 1987. Am I correct.

Reason I ask is this truck is geared so low now. I mean first is useless and its like driving a 4-speed. What I want to do is change the differential on it so I can actually use first and get much better gas mileage like it was before the rear-end was replaced. Also what do I need to purchase to change the differential on it because I'm not real familiar on how everything all works. All the different sizes and splines are confusing and looking for some help and input.

Thanks guys,
Jess

Re: Chevy s10 rear end differential

If it's an 87 and the axles are original, it will have 26 spline axles. However there's no telling what a previous owner may have changed. The only way to know exactly what's in it is to pull the cover.
