Question about STB install...

I just bought an Edelbrock STB #5226 for my TPI motor and can't wait to get it on the car. My question is, how do I get it on the car? I heard about right angle drills but holy crap are they expensive! I plan on just pulling off the hood drilling the holes and reinstalling the hood. However, is it like SFC were the suspension has to be loaded? One last thing, does anyone know the torque specs?

I installed mine with the car sitting on a concrete floor at normal ride height. I used a drill with a stepped bit for the four brace holes. If you can borrow/rent a right-angle drill for the cowl drilling, you'll make your life a lot easier. No torque specs accompany the STB (at least they didn't come with mine), so I played it by ear.

Re: Question about STB install...

if you do remove hood a tip to make re-installation easy . on the front and rear of each hinge , drill a small 1/8th " hole through hinge bracket and attach point . ( not through hood ) when you re-install , align holes with small nail or drill bit . then tighten bolts , presto you have same hood alignment . hope this helps . good luck .

Quoted for some of the best advice when dealing with body panels... I had to pull the hood on my 87 once. I made two holes. One at the front, and one at the rear...to eliminate the chance of something getting out of wack.

I also use this method for door hinge removal...and not just on thirdgens.

Its not a horrible idea to use alittle paint on a q-tip in the hole you just drilled...just to keep the corrosion away.

But how will I tighten the bolts that go through the strut tower with the wheel still there? Do I just slip the bolts in, then jack the car, take off the wheel, then tighten everything?

What do you mean when you say "play it by ear?" Just tighten it until it feels snug?

Now that you mention that, I think I remember seeing that on the TV show "Muscle Car." Thanks for reminding me; that would have been a huge headache...

You'll be able to tighten everything with the tire in place.

I snugged the bolts up (I'd guess somewhere between 20 and 25 pounds), then drove a few miles and rechecked them. All seems good.

you don't need to take off wheel . unless you have really big hands and arms there is plenty of room . good luck .
