Rear End Alignment?

The neighbor took his 97' TA to a GM dealership to see why the rear tires were wearing out on the inside. They told him that there is no way to adjust the alignment on the rear end. And that was it and sent him on his way. Acted like they didn't even want his business and look at the car to see if the axle was bent or anything else. So my neighbor takes the car into town to a local service garage and they said that was a load of crap that u can't align a rear end. They put "shims" in it and said it was fixed. Well, the passenger side is better but still off, and the driver is no better. My question is, should he take it somewhere to see if the axle is bent or something else major before he takes it back to the local shop to have them shim it some more. I've never seen a rear end to that! And also, I have a 85 IROC. Will that rear end work on his 97 TA?

Re: Rear End Alignment?

Third gens are easy to align but not with factory components. When we upgrade to aftermarket parts such as adjustable torque arm, lower control arms and panhard bar, the diff is completely adjustable.

A diff that is bent can be straightened but needs to be removed and stripped down to do it.

You third gen diff will fit into a fourth gen but it's about 4" narrower meaning you'll need different rims with less backspace.
