What size tires can I get?

I didn't know where else to put this so:

I have an '87 trans am with stock rims (15 in.). I'm installing a new engine, about 415 hp but I also need to get new tires. I want something that's gonna give me good traction on the strip but good for street too. Does anyone know the widest tire i can get? Any suggestions on sizes or models? Also, how important is it to pay attention to speed rating? I was told I should aim for "H" (130mph max) or greater.

Thank you

Re: What size tires can I get?

someone else told me that we can use 10 inch rims in the rear and you are pushing it when you use more than 17x40(or was it 35)x315 - but there is a tire section where they talk about it.
but i remember that 10 inches was about it before you had to get out the hammer and get some more room. remember the back spacing.
i think 8 inches is about the largest for the front, you probably cane use more than 275's up there.
look at the vett rims and tires, those are 18 or 19 inch rears and you can mount those with adapters.

On your 15x7s, you can run 275/50R15 drag radials from Nitto, BFGoodrich or Mickey Thompson. The Mickeys are the stickiest, the Nittos are least sticky of these 3, but still better than any non-drag-radial, and the nittos are the best of these 3 if you get caught in the rain. If you go this route, run a 215/65R15 or 235/60R15 on the front. If you want a maximum fit, you can run a 17x9.5 with 5.5" backspacing on all 4 corners, on 275/40R17s. There are drag radials in this size. Same goes for 18s, 275/40R18x9.5 w/ 5.5" Backspacing. These look the best, and fill the wheelwells better, but raise your center of gravity by 1/2"

Re: What size tires can I get?

Just put some G60 radial t/a's on it for the street and get another set of rims and put L60mickey thompsons on it for the strip. Best way to go.
