Wheel vibration
Wheel vibration
I have a 1986 IROC-Z that when I take the car on the highway when I get over 60 MPH the front wheel start to vibrate. It has a complete front end rebuild (it needed it bad), wheel alignment and balanced.
question: The mechanic at PEP B### says that its my rims that they are so worn (140,000 miles) they can not be balanced, could this be true?
I don't want to wast my time then trying to find use IROC rims just to have the same problem.

Re: Wheel vibration
May not be 'worn', but one may be bent. Have another shop put the wheel on a spin balancer and have them run it up to 60mph to see. The balancers will usually go up to those speeds, but they often won't run them past 35mph to balance - the theory is that any vibrations will appear at 35 well enough to be balanced out which should take care of vibrations up to twice that speed (70mph). But, it's not always the case.
When I ask for spin balancing up to 60mph, they look at me crazy - then I ask them how fast did they drive to work this morning? They always smile and tell me they hit 80mph, then I say "yeah, then why do you think I should only go 70mph?"
