Re: J&M strut mount ?s

I can attest to she "stand up" nature of the guys at Hotpart. I am using KYB AGX struts and apparently they have a different thread size on the strut shaft that protrudes through the strut mount. i recieved the mounts quickly and noticed the problem immediately. A quick call to Hotpart and they had a new set of retaining nuts machined and on their way to me, no charge! The new set of retaining nuts was not powdercoated (I assume to save time), and at first i was going to have them coated myself. After assembling everything however, I decided I really like the look of all the natural finish hardware on the black coated towers! I think I'll just clear coat them and leave it at that.
In all, the guys were VERY nice, answered all my questions, and responded to my customer service call very quickly!
A BIG thumbs up from Columbus Ohio guys!

Re: J&M strut mount ?s

So from what I understand, if the windshield is already cracked, having a 3 point will put pressure on the windshield via the LIP attachment of the STB, causing the cracks to widen.

But maybe this is only because it is already cracked... Perhaps, if one's windshield is perfectly intact, no cracks will ever occur? Has anyone with a 3pt STB, and a perfect windshield, ever experienced cracks from simply hard cornering?

Re: J&M strut mount ?s

I did a search both on TGO and the net in general. I found nothing to support the idea that the 3-pt. will crack a windshield on a thirdgen. If there were problems, I'd think the board/net would be flooded with complaints and/or reports, but that's not the case. I've run the Edelbrock 3-pt. for several years without issues.

Re: J&M strut mount ?s

You have the edelbrock one? Crap I got the MAC one specifically because the Edelbrock one says 87 and up although i never knew why.. Since I'm installing J+M mounts do you think it will work with my 86 IROC? I did notice a difference slightly when installing the MAC STB but i would like to buy the 3pt one though for even better handling...

The Edelbrock won't fit a car with the compressor on the driver's side (there's a brace interference). I swapped to a serp system, which is why I experienced no fitment issues. Check my Car Details below for a pic, if you wish. Note that I'm running the Spohn version of the strut mount.

i have a solid mounted 3 point STB, and push the car pretty hard and have no windsheild damage. I have always heard that damage can happen, but never seen a pic or proof, just a lot of 3rd hand experience

am i the only one confused by this?

Im running the KYB AGX with my J&M mounts and i didnt have an issue, or is it that you lost the nuts to the struts and hotpart sent one out to u? not sure i understand your post.

but yes, i contacted J&M and i will have to pay shipping but they will replace the damaged part, no problem. very good customer service.

hellzwings, essentially this is what happened in my experience. the crack DID not spread with the 2pt when i drove it for 2-3 weeks with only the 2pt and the windsheild had the 2 cracks already.

im not stating that a 3pt will crack your windsheild but in my case it enhanced my crack considerably in a short distance of prob 4miles. Ive also only heard of it cracking a perfectly good windsheild randomly on the net, mostly 3rd hand stuff as well.

i dnt kno what the mac brace looks like i think i saw pics once but i dnt remember. i like the UMI one but too bad its not a 3pt. i dnt like the BMR STB, the 3pt looks weak with how its made.

customblackbird; i'm not sure how i got retaining nuts that were the wrong thread size. i still have the original nuts. I never questioned why, never had to.

Ahh.. Gotcha... So I just might get the edelbrock one... As for the compressor.. The AC compressor right? If so, I got that removed anyway I converted to non AC heater box so there's plenty of room it doesn't look like anything could possibly get in the way.. I'll snap some pics of my engine soon.

thnx !

Ahh so then I'm golden to get the Edelbrock STB! I was thinking... What if we connected the STB to the nose of the car? (ex: the upper radiator steel support peice). Wouldn't that stiffen up the front a bit? By connecting the firewall the the strut towers and then to the front nose structure? Just a thought...

I know of at least one member on here who tried that. Do a search for "10 point STB" and you should find his thread.

No need to search for a thread, unless you want details or more info on it, or if this is different.

Nope, that's the one I was thinking of. I didn't have a pic of it, nor do I have the thread bookmarked. Got a pic now though!

Re: J&M strut mount ?s

ha that pic makes me smile everytime i see it lol. its weird why the guy built it. he did it for his daughter bc he wanted to stiffen the front end up lol... i dnt understand why creating something like that was neccessary but the guy went all out.

Re: J&M strut mount ?s

That guy should build these and sell them (would be expensive tho)... I do think it's a bit overkill tho and possibly adding unnecessary weight but it's a damn great idea... Also adding a connection with that brace to the k-member AS well as the steering box support? Haha
