Power Steering Problem

I recently switched my drivetrain to a different Camaro body, and when I started it, I forgot to fill the power steering pump with fluid. After about 10 minutes of running, I overfilled it some. I now have no power assist. I am assuming the pump is cooked. Or is there a bleeding procedure? I just hooked everything back together. Did I do something wrong? When you turn the wheel, the pump will groan from time to time. Any help would be great! Thank you in advance!

Re: Power Steering Problem

if the ran the pump dry, it most likely toast.

you should at least gravity bleed the system if its all empty. But i dont think that will help now

Re: Power Steering Problem

Can you go somewhere & get a turkey baster? IMO it would be alot cleaner than removing the lo-pressure hose to try to get to the cold level.
As far as the pump being done for, I have no experience in that area.

So the 1 body had NOTHING in it, so what's in it is everything from the other? Would have been an easy check.

Is there a recycle or j yard close to you? There's 1 about about 2 miles from me, if it turns out the pump is bad,if they have it, I can price it for you & probly even meet you @ Flying J or around the mall. I'll need to know the type of pulleys you have & maybe the motor. Other than that Tonica is the only thing I can think of!! Rhode's doesn't have any Camaros but they may still have the Firebird I got my interior door panels from.
I can't remember the year or motor that's in it.

If this helps, LMK by a PM & I'll call them 1st thing in the AM. I won't be around Friday--gotta work all weekend.
Good luck

( edit )
So you got answers b4 I was done typing!! LMK if you want me to call Ligori's, or Rhode's.

Re: Power Steering Problem

Thanks Both of you for the replies. I swapped everything from my car(totalled)to the new convertible shell, but I did install new inner and outer tierods, sleeves, lower ball joints, upper strut mounts, drag link, and a used Iroc steering box, and I know that it worked fine before getting it. I just had it aligned Tuesday, but the only old part is my pump. A reman one is $50 so I would just go that route. But I appreciate you offering to get one from the boneyard for me. I was hoping that I didnt have to pull the pump, cause I have everything cleaned and repainted. And it has the serpentine system, and it requires a special tool to pull the pulley.

Re: Power Steering Problem

Running a pump dry is most definitely bad. Also towards flushing a PS system out, just unhook the outlet hose have it sit in a bucket while you are constantly pouring new fluids in making sure it doesn't go dry while running the car. Fluids may cost you a bit, but you will have a nice clean power steering system afterwards. My plan is to buy some nice cheap power steering conventional fluid and do the flush with that, then hook everything back up and remove as much as I can of the conventional with a turkey baster and add new synthetic fluids. Good to go.

Wait, is this for a steering pump, or for the steering box? Either way thats how I will flush mine.

The IROC steering BOX has a quicker ratio than the z28 and base models as well as different travel distances
