Alcon or Wilwood any good?
I'm in the planning process of upgrading my brake system.I've seen a few different brands and know that Baer is one of the best in the business. But how does Wilwood and Alcon compare to Baer? My main reason for this inquiry is to find out if the big difference in price is comparable to the difference in performance. In other words, is the performance difference small enough between the brands that I can save a few bucks by getting the less expensive brand, yet still have comparable braking power.Did I say that right? Anyway, any comments would be greatly appreciated.

Baer has quite a selection of systems that are as good as you get for street/hipo. Alcon is Baers upscale line, and pricey. I don't know too much about Wilwood other than drag race applications. What's your application? http://baer.com/

What I'm wanting to do is set up a canyon carver and just want a set of good brakes for the street. Road race more or less.

i have the baer track kit on the front of my car and the baer drum to disk conversion in the back. i use my car for daily driving as well as for street modified autocross action. i have to say it is the best street braking system that i have ever driven. and that is in a car that tips the scales at nearly 3600lbs.

Check out Aerospace Components, they make a good system for our cars, its the prostreet front brake kit.I like the Baer brake they are a good system,I was going to go with them ,but I run skinnys and their rotors wont fit in small rims(15 and under)Their kits tend to be overpriced,in my opinion.

Tom K. and I researched brakes heavily and have spoken to or e-mailed the major companies. If you want to canyon carve then its either Baer or a 1LE kit.
Wilwood is strictly for a drag race application. Their rotors are to thin for agressive street use. The same goes for Aerospace I believe.
You can also contact Global West but their kit is VERY expensive.

Cool. But how does the 1Le compare to Baer as far as dollar to performance ratio?

You can't beat the Baer brakes.
The 1LE kit will run you around $900 to $1,000. Depending on which level Baer kit you go with you're looking at $1,000 plus.

BretD,I also looked heavily into brake kits, and most dont know but the kit Aerospace offers in the Jegs catolog IS for mostly stip vehicles and goes for $599.But you have to call up the company direct and get the Prostreet kit, which is what I have,It is one step above the Aerospace and comparable Willwood. It comes with a much thicker rotor, .88 inches ,and goes for $699.All billet aluminum hardware,4 piston billet aluminum calipers, and cuts about 20 pounds off the front end.I went with these because Baer is just too dam expensive, and most people dont relize that those bigger rotors and calipers add front end weight. If a Willwood or Aerospace kit (drag kit) can stop a 140mph drag car,why wouldnt it work exceptional on the street? My kit is simaler to the drag kits offered, just with thicker rotors for street use, hence thinner rotors on the drag cars brake system help lighten up the front end.Another thing to consider is that you will be only able to use certain size rims with the Baer kits usually 16inches and bigger,so if you plan to bring the car to the strip you wont be able to run skinnys, most skinnys are 15inches or smaller.Im not putting down Baer at all but the prices of their kits are not for the faint of heart.Look aroung and call the companys and ask questions, you can find deals if you look hard enough

I have the Baer Track 13/12 system with PBR dual piston fts/single piston rears and have had it for nearly 5 years. It comes with 1.1 inch thick front rotors. For the canyon carving your asking about, you need to be able to disipate the braking heat rapidly and have a rotor that will standup to rapid and repeated braking. smaller or thinner rotors become more suseptible to warpage than thicker rotors.
Another factor, I can buy all of the repair/replacement parts at any local GM or Ford dealer (used on 1LE's, 88+ vettes, and certain Cobras!, not to mention AutoZone, Hi'lo etc. Try finding pads or caliper parts locally with Aerospace or Willwood.
Not flaming other companies products, because they're all better than factory small disc or drum F-body bakes.

alcon are makers of top of the line racing calipers, they pioneered the use of different piston sizes on calipers with 4 or more pistons to reduce taper wear, but the price reflects the quality of their parts.
