replacing power steering gearbox in '84 TA , 2 different suspension options???
I'm replacing the PS-gear box, it seems that is is on its way out and could actually sieze up
,good news is it's only going to cost me $189.00 from autozone ($500 at the dealer
) I didn't plan on replacing that unit any time soon,at least it has a lifetime warranty. I was offered the choice of "sport suspension" or "non sport suspension" I'm pretty sure that the '84 TA didn't have two different suspension options. If it did what would be the difference? and why would it matter for the PS gear case? my only guess is that the "sport equiped" part has a higher turning ratio, could it be 2.25:1 ? do I have to use the part for an '84? what year GTA has the riverfire, or whatever it's called, steering box? I can't see how it would make a difference either way, common sense tells me to get the PS box for the "sport" susp. equip.

THe sport box is 2.5 turns, the regular one i s slower , not sure of the ratio, but probably similar to a schoolbus
.
The 1LE boxes are the 2.25 turn, maybe some others. There always seems to be a little controversy on this board when this topic pops up...

1984 L69, IROC look, tangerine orange
305 from 87 IROC, tossed peanut cam,
replaced with LT1 cam.
Uses gas as fast as i can pump it!

controversy is good!
I don't see any reason why I couldn't throw a 2.25:1 1LE case in, 2.50:1 is what I have stock.

The quick ratio steering boxes were not just on 1LE cars. My IROC had one. My 454SS truck has one. Look for a large Z cast in the steering box case.
