steering gear lash adjust, what does it adjust?

I think it has something to do with compensating for play in the steering system, but what happens inside the gearbox when the "gear lash" is adjusted from the allen head on the top?? I really want to screw with it but don't want to screw it up.any input appreciated

It makes the gears mesh together tighter. Just don't go too much.

As time goes by, the medal to medal contack wears down the parts. By adjusting this, you can return the pieces back to orginal tolorances.
