Need new steering box.Few ?'s w/n.

I will soon be replacing my current stock gearbox,as it seems to be wearing out and causing a lot of slop in the steering( so Firestone says). I want a tighter box for performance that will swap right in.Suggestions? Any certain numbers on the casing I should be looking for,or a certain type of vehicle year or model if I decide to get a used one? I want the best performing one GM made for our cars.Thanx.

If you have the money buy a new one. You might be right back were you started if you buy a used one. AGR steering has a good one for are cars. Part number 1161-p thats the one I have and IM very happy with it. They will set the valving in the box for steering effort as soft or firm as you like it. Soft doesnt work to well in these cars. To easy to over correct the wheel with soft valving. The box comes stock with a 210 torsion valve. That would be pretty close to what your RS had before. But with the wheel combo you have I would go with the 220 valve. Thats what I have in mine its pretty close to the stock IROC valving. The circle track guys run a 230 valve firmer still.

The box is a bolt in part also. I would install a Strut tower brace if you havent already that will take alot of the wander out of your front end.

If you want to do some junkyard searching, try to find some IROC Camaros. If you find a steering box with "26000525" and a "Z" cast into it, that should be the quick-ratio box. I bought one a while ago but haven't had a chance to install it.

are you sure the slop is all in the steering box? the rag joint or u joint in the steering shaft could be toasted too, remove the dust shield and twist it with your hand, watch the shaft couplings, and the linkages below to determine where all of your play is.I just replaced the coupler and the gearbox. much better!! and no more fluid leaking. I replaced the whole system lifetime warranty(autozone) pump, gear and hoses for $250,I did it myself, it wasn't to hard exept for swapping the pulley on the pump(could be better to have the pros do this if you don't have the right tools) the gear is an ATSCO remanufactured unit for "sport equiped" cars.obviously the "sport version" is the appropriate replacment,it's ratio is 13:1 the other is 17:1. theres two adjustments you can make on your old gearbox before you replace it I would consider that if your short on cash.

Hey if you are interested Flaming river makes a Vega style Manual steering box with a kit to put it in our cars. It weighs 45 pounds less than the power steering (only 12 pounds) It comes with the correct pitman arm a stub shaft and u-joint to elimanante the sloppy rag joint. Its very tight. I have one my self and love it. The manual steering isn't as bad as you think. Its not that hard unless you are trying to do a sharp at a stop and even then its not that bad.
