Steering tilt joint thingy
Steering tilt joint thingy
Hey, I got a 86 Camaro with tilt steering and the tilt thing is screwed up. The steering wheel moves all around and I think it's the joint that's in there. I attempted to fix it myself and I've gotten down to where there are no more apparent bolts or screws to take out. And now I don't know what to do. The manual doesn't say anything about this. Does anyone know how to get down to that joint and take it apart or should I just forget it and get someone to fix it for me?

If the bearings are good, there are 4 reverse torx screws in the column. These are what always come loose.
You will probably only be able to get three of them tight.

My steering column did this. It could be the torx bolts the other poster mentioned or it could be the bearings in the steering column have collapsed. The bearing carrier is made of plastic and they fail. Pulling the column apart is tedious and most manuals don't show the procedure to well. I did mine, it took three days! It is not difficult per se but it is not incredible obvious (at least to me) how everything comes apart. If you work at it slowly going in through the steering wheel you can do it. I think taking the column out of the car makes it easier to work on.
