Anyone have the torque spec for the ball joint nut from a FACTORY service manual?

Depending on what page you look in a chiltons it could be 77 ft lbs, 170 NM , moog ball joint instructions 55-65 ft lbs, the internet... anything from "just hand tighten it!" to 65 ft lbs to 90 ft lbs.

Wish I still had my gm manual but loaned it out and never got it back

 

Don't have a factory manual, but Alldata says 90 Ft. Lbs. for upper or lower on an '87.

 

Interesting as well as confusing. I have three shop manuals. The 1985 (Camaro) says 78 ft. lbs, the 1987 says 90, the 1991 says 83 (both the later Firebird).

Hmm I just did mine the other day. 1987 Camaro shop manual. 77 ft/lb

 

Wow, this spec is all over the place. '92 FSM for a Camaro states 80 ft/lb. Plus 1/6 turn max to align cotter pin. I wonder who writes these specs?

I've never torqued a ball joint nut. I get it tight then turn till the opening lines up so I can put the cotter pin in. If you torque it to a certain spec, more than likely the nut wont be in the correct spot anyways so you will still have to tighten it more.

 

Some of us are **** in such matters.

Yes, whether it be aircraft or my car, I don't trust my arm for German Torque (Good'ntight)

This is crazy how the spec is all over the place. I guess I'll shoot for one of the late model service manual specs.

If that is what you installed, I would follow those instructions. If they're worth their salt, they provided a number that provides the proper amount of force on the fastener of the material they're using.
