How can you tell if your rear shocks are blown?

I lowered my car 2 weeks ago and had problems with the car bottoming out every now and then.
We'd push down on the rear and it felt fine.
I replaced the shocks with KYB shocks because I thought the old shocks weren't firm enough. The old shocks were actually blown, but driving in the car they seemed fine.
How do you know when they go bad?

Thanks

They usually go bad by leaking their fluid out. So any oil on the bottom half of the shock is a good indicator that they are toast.

well the ase way is very complicated, the easy shade tree way is bounce the rear end...if it "rolls" up and down then the shock is bad. I had very baddly blown struts in my 92 cam and I would have never knew had I not bounced the front and it did not refuse to go down or bounce a little.

I had a pair of shocks that broke internally. They would push down(compress easily), but would rebound with resistance. Kind of like drag shocks. I would bottom out, but I couldn't make the rear end bounce while checking the shocks. They weren't leaking and looked perfect. Just to let you know that the bounce method doesn't always work.

My car bottomed out when I would go over any dips.... Thanks to KYB it no longer does...

BTW, when I replaced them, I pushed them down out of the top holes with one finger... now that is baaaaad.
