Anybody switched to rack and pinion?

Is it worth the hassle?

I can't imagine how it would be worth the hassle. The only advantage would be shedding a little bit of weight off the front end. The front suspension will have to be heavily modified, or somehow replaced with a different suspension all together.

------------------
350 with stealth intake, holley carb, 470 lift cam. 700r4 with .5 boost valve, vette servo, tci lock-up kit, B&M megashifter. Richmond 3.73 gears, powertrax locker, timkin bearings, synthetic lube. Custom 3 inch single into 2 2.5 pipes. 1 1/2 drop springs, 1 5/16 solid front sway bar, 1 inch rear bar, custom subframe connectors, custom LCA relocation brackets. Kobel ground FX, current red metallic paint. Lots of other stuff...

Thanks for confirming my beliefs. I've heard that rack and pinion was just so much better than gear box steering, but I've driven both, (84 Vette and my 91 Firebird) and to tell the truth, I like my steering better. I will definitely be sticking with mine, but what's the big deal with rack and pinion?

Aside from the lighter weight, rack & pinion steering uses fewer additional parts and pivot points (there's no idler arm or centerlink). Especially in non-power assisted steering systems, that provides greater feedback from the tire/road to the steering wheel. And that's part of how you can tell how close to the limit you are on front end grip, by the "feel" through the steering wheel.

Yea, when I drove the vette I could feel the road like it was in my hands. It was very responsive but I like the feel of our steering better. Thanks guys.
