strut going out?

ive had this annoying noise, it sounds like a bolt clanging up against something in the lower front passenger region by the wheel, and it happens every time i hit a bump, and lasts the duration of the bump. anyways, i thought that it was just a sign of the strut needing replaced, but its been two months and the knock is now accompanied by a hollower sound, in the same area. i know i need to have my struts replaced, and i called around, got quoted for 100 dollars to install my kyb's, plus alignment. i could try it myself, but dont wanna get stranded ya know? can anyone help me out? these sounds are probably my struts right? when will i know they are needing replaced asap? thanks
