rear disk brakes and e-brake for a '89 GTA
I went to the mechanic for several problems with my car (right after I've bought it). He planned the 4 disks and he changed all brake pads. My hand-brake was'nt working at all (when I've bought the car). He made remanufacture the rear callipers because he said they were jammed.
I've taken the car back and I've noticed then the hand-brake was allways not functional. I thought that is an adjusting problem so I went to a Pontiac garage. He told me that one rear calliper was bad (!!!) and that I should benefit from the warranty I have from the first garage.
I went back to the first garage and he changed one cable(the longitudinal one) and my hand brake holds the car just a little now. I believe he did'nt changed the bad callipper (I have the GM proof that the calliper is bad).
How can I know if it's not something else? Maybe the caliper is good...
BTW my brakes can't hold the rear wheels from spinning on the ground even with the brake pedal fully pressed above 1500 rpm.

Rear brakes on the GTA are almost useless. There is a mod in the tech articles on this site that can restore some braking power to the rear. Dont know how this will affect burnouts though...
BTW, My e-brake barely holds the car, probably enough for the inspection (find out next week) and the rear spins up easily with the brake pedal depressed.

Just for a quick test, get up to 10mph or so on a gravel driveway or some grass and pull the hand brake. Get out ond see if anything locked up and where it/they locked up compared to each other.
If one side locks and the other does'nt, or one is coming on slower than the other, you'll know if it seized or getting stiff.

ok guys i have an ebrake question too. If the ebrake is over adjusted can that cause the rear brakes to make contact with the rotor a bit? I'll explain...it takes like 4 clicks of the handbrake to full engage. After the 4 or 5 clicks i can't pull the handle up anymore, is this bad? Also since its so tight i think its cause my rear pads to come in contact with the rotors ever so slightly since they look like they are glazed...should i loosen the parking brake a bit or could it be that my rear calipers are shot?
