Maximum caster without rubbing tires?

Future plans are J&M strut mounts and an aggressive alignment. I see people running 4-5.5 in the caster ranges. But I'm not sure who is and isn't running into trouble with tires rubbing at full lock.

I'm running 245/50/16 tires on stock height Moog springs.

Unfortunately, to pull out of my parking spot at home, I have to go full lock, turning the wheel to the right when I back up. I don't want to run into rubbing issues.

Re: Maximum caster without rubbing tires?

Depends on the ACTUAL AS-MEASURED tire dimensions of the specific tires you actually have (not all tires of a given "trade" size are the same diameter or width, let alone profile, and the "corner" squareness, and tread wear, and whatever else) and your creativity in adjusting the fenders.

Did I say "actual" enough?

With those pizza-cutter stock tires though, you shouldn't have too terribly much trouble. If you do, you'll get used to it easily enough. It's worth it.

Re: Maximum caster without rubbing tires?

when i rebuilt my front end, with a lot of aftermarket goodies, my fudged caster was almost 7 degrees, and it didnt rub anywhere IIRC. my tires measured aout to about 25" in the front, loaded. The car has tall balljoints, i dont know what affect that had on the caster.

I was told by the shop that did my alignment that it was at about 7 degrees, i did not measure my self.

Re: Maximum caster without rubbing tires?

I agree on tires not being uniform size. Currently I have 3 Goodyear GS-D3 tires and 1 Michelin Pilot Sport A/S. (I had a flat Goodyear that couldn't be fixed and Goodyear has decided to not make the GS-D3's in 245/50/16 size anymore)

So despite having 4 of the same "size" tires, the Michelin is actually significantly taller than the Goodyear. Had both of them off and sitting side by side when the new struts went in.

I'll be putting 3 more Pilot Sport A/S tires on there within the next month. My Goodyears are getting worn out.

Re: Maximum caster without rubbing tires?

Hmmmm. All season tires. Why bother with an aggressive alignment?

If you are really looking to reap the benefits of an aggressive alignment I would look at typical Summer tires, at a minimum.

I can't think of any reason to run all seasons in Houston.

What are you planning to use the car for?

But to answer your question, I run 5.5 degrees of caster with no issues. This is on the street and on the track.

Re: Maximum caster without rubbing tires?

Pilot Sport and Pilot Sport 2 tires are only available in 17" and larger wheels. For 16", the only Michelin is the PS A/S.

Tire Rack seems to give the A/S tires even better ratings in the dry than most summer only tires.

I suppose I could have gotten some Firestone Firehawk tires. But at the time, I needed a tire and just wanted to get back on the road. I'd debated the Pilot Sports vs the GS-D3 tires years before when I bought the Goodyears initially.

Plans for the car are simply driving on the road. Having fun on the street.

While it's true that Houston doesn't really get winter. We do get some brutal rain storms. Street flooding type stuff. The A/S are modestly better at channeling the water away. Although if Michelin still made the P/S or P/S 2 in 16", I would have gotten the summer version.

Yeah I have to be in Houston soon; hope it doesn't storm too much while I'm there.

Re: Maximum caster without rubbing tires?

I have the firestone firehawk indy 500 tires and love them. Hard to break loose.

I cannot seem to get more than 4.6 degrees of caster on any side. MY J+M strut mounts are maxed all the way back on the mount itself and how it is mounted on the strut tower.

But I have stock height MOOG springs, which might be the reason why I cannot achieve more than that. If I lower the car then it might be possible to get more angle out of it.
