I'm looking to replace the inner an outer tie rods on my 89 Gta trans am I went to go get a service check for the steering an suspension an the technician said I need both inner an outer tie rods an also ball joints bottom an top I'm totally mechanically inclined into doing the job I got the tools an everything to do it just looks like a funky setup don't look nothing like the way I did on my 86 Fiero gt can I get some feed back on how to this removal an installion procedures thanks in advance

there is no upper ball joint, so the tech was full of it.

balljoints need to be pressed in and out. the rest is pretty much a bolt in deal.

while its apart, consider replacing the idler arm too, since its a wear part. And dont forget to get an alignment afterwards.

since you will have it all apart anyway, might be a good time to get new struts if you need them

 

So is it better to take the control arms off the car an press the ball joint out that way or can it be done on the car also this would involve the coil spring being compressed of I'm right ???

 

it can be done on the car, with the proper tools, but it can be a bitch sometimes. Its just easier to take them off and have them pressed out/in. besides, if you are going the all this hassle, it would be a good to to replace the control arm bushings too. Maybe even bead blast and paint the arms while you are at it. make it all nice a shiny.

or just do the joint, its up to you.

I tried to use the c clamp style balljoint tool to remove mine, they were in aftermarket control arms though, and i almost broke the tool.

 

i too had an issue trying to use the c-clamp tool for the ball joints; the arm is not completely flat and can make pressing them a bit of a chore.

also, when changing the tie rods, pull the whole assembly (inner, sleeve, and outer) out as one piece. that way you can match up the new parts in a relatively close legth/layout so the car is not drastically out of alignment
