So my transmount broke, considering going over the edge, opinions?

So, my car has the symptoms of either a broken transmission mount, or dislocated crossmember (Wheelhop, something bumps the floor on launch, etc etc, I haven't had time to put it on a lift to fully inspect the issue yet though)

And I was looking at just OEM replacements, and they're under $10, but I was also looking at upgrading some of my chassis parts, a friend with a 4th gen told me UMI performance makes good parts for the Camaros, and I was wondering what some of your input would be on my parts list. Pros/Cons, etc etc and what benefits I will see from all this. My car already has the factory kit with the bigger sway bars and the better bushings on them.

Also, if there's any other parts I should add to my list feel free to suggest. I know there's a lot of knowledge on these boards so I figure this would be the place to ask before I start buying!

I'd suggest after market strut mounts with a spherical bearing before adding the STB. Following are a couple of links that you may find interesting:

It's most likely a broken trans mount. I'd skip the trans crossmember, as it isn't going to do you any good IMO. I agree with James, get some aftermarket strut mounts before doing an STB. The steering brace is a good idea. I like the one from TDS better though because it has 3 mounting holes on each side instead on 2 like the UMI one does. http://www.top-downsolutions.com/ste...bird-p-45.html SFC's are another good idea. The UMI ones are nice, I have them on my car.

Hey Inpheksion.

Thanks for loading your list with UMI products. Jerry, our tech guru, could help you sort your list. Moving even the stock torque arm off the trans tailshaft is a great move. Also, the info above is pretty solid.

As an FYI, there's a Thanksgiving sale coming up. You can call us to solidify part numbers then shop over the holiday. Or you can call to get the part numbers straightened out and order from Summit.

We're here to help.

Re: So my transmount broke, considering going over the edge, opinions?

Thank you for your help everyone! After reading that thread on Prothane vs OEM Rubber, I might rethink which trans-mount material to go with.

And thank you for the info Ramey, unfortunately today I walked out and one of my tires was flat, so unfortunately I'll have to replace that before buying any goodies, which I will most likely purchase around Christmas time, unless my tire can be repaired without having to be replaced.

I do have some questions:

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/UPI-2217-R/?rtype=10

Does that kit include the crossmember as well as the adjustable torque arm, and everything I need to replace it? And if I did get that kit I wouldn't have to change the tailshaft on my trans now would I? Also, will an OEM replacement rubber trans mount work with that crossmember, or will an aftermarket be required? I have a 700r4.

SO my new additions/revised list:

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/UPI-2217-R/?rtype=10

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/UPI-2012-R/

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/UPI-2030-R/?rtype=10 (Not sure if I'm going with this or the TDS version, depends on pricing, and other reviews I hear on each product)

Also, I'm new to suspension work, so could someone explain more about the strut mounts, or send me links to suggested products? Thank you!

The OE mount is designed with rubber which will deflect even with an STB in place. vetruck (Dean), an incredibly knowledgeable former member, summed it up:

"Good solid strut mounts are a far better bang for the buck in performance handling. Without them, the STB is basicallly useless."

Hey Inpheksion. Yes, it bolts right in and includes the crossmember and torque arm. There are some good install pics on our site, same part number as summit. You can see the transmission mount in the pics. The rubber one bolts right in or you can upgrade to a poly one.

Your transmission tailshaft can remain as-is, no problem-o.

Strut tower braces are a common upgrade but as JamesC so capably mentioned, the solid strut mounts with spherical bearings instead of the rubber biscuit type really tightens up the front end.

Your list is pretty good and of course we appreciate you choosing UMI.

Re: So my transmount broke, considering going over the edge, opinions?

Good News! I believe I fixed my tire, it seemed to just be a bad valve stem core, hopefully that's all it was. So I most likely will be placing an order during the thanksgiving sale, I don't know If I'll be ordering everything in one go, but definitely the torque arm kit and probably the strut mounts.

Excellent! Glad your tire trouble freed up some cash for quality UMI parts.

One great thing about suspension parts is how you can mix and match and build-as-you-go.

See you around Thanksgiving!

Re: So my transmount broke, considering going over the edge, opinions?

Well I love seeing customer pictures and reviews when I'm looking to buy a product, and its not fair to want some thing and not give back, so there will be plenty of pics along the way. Also, I'll probably do a full review on everything once it's completely installed and post that on here.

And if you have any installation guides in like .pdf format or on your website I could give you my email adress, I wouldn't mind reading over those while I wait for the parts to arrive, if you don't that's fine, and I'll be sure to contact you if I do need the installation help. Thank you, you've been a lot of help.
