Type of front suspension?

What is the stock front suspension on our cars considered to be? Its like a cross between a double wishbone and MacPherson strut setup.. What exactly is it referred to as?

Searched but could only come up with people asking "what kind of suspension should I get?"....

Re: Type of front suspension?

I've always just called it MacPherson strut. They always have some type of lower arm. The strut replaces the upper arm and constrains the top of the suspension.

Re: Type of front suspension?

But doesn't a true MacPherson strut setup combine the strut and spring? Ours our separate. And would going to an aftermarket k-member (such as yours) setup for coil over which would give us a true MacPherson setup get rid of the added stress on the strut mount by doing a coil over with the stock setup? I.e. By attaching the upper strut mount to the aftermarket k-member to hold the weight then tying it into the body at the stock location?

Not sure if that last question came out clearly or not...It is in my head...

I actually am pretty sure it's called a "Modified McPherson Strut" suspension. So a lot of you are right.

Is there a more specific answer? Maybe, but I've never caught it. I picked that up from reading Camaro: The Third Generation.

No by running a coil over setup you will add even more stress to the strut mount because now that mount needs to hold the weight of the car.

I'm not sure of the history of the Mc Strut but I'd imagine there are a ton of combos. Modified Mc Strut sounds good.

We are currently working on our version of the coilover for third gens which should be pretty exciting when released.

no biggie... its a strut frontend, but the spring is in a different spot. should still work the same as a typical strut front end, but the spring rates will be a little higher since the lower control arm has more leverage with the spring running closer to the pivot point of the arm.
