Power Steering Delete

I'm thinking about deleting my power steering (currently in the middle of a build) and I'm wondering if I really need an S-10 manual box. I know it's really hard to turn the wheel without it but I'm one of those messed up types that likes moving heavy stuff So will running the stock box without the pump damage the steering components? I'm running 215 width tires

Re: Power Steering Delete

its not a good idea. It wont hurt steering parts, but may affect the box life since it will have no lubrication. You really need to use the proper manual box for this conversion.

why do you want to remove the PS?

Re: Power Steering Delete

Got it. Just looking to free up a bit more power, shave some weight off the front and clean up the engine bay. It's a daily driver but I've had to turn the wheel with the pump not working (ran out of gas, d'oh) and it's nothing I mind.

If it'll hurt the box then I'll use it without the pump until I can buy an S10 manual box (which shouldn't take long)

Re: Power Steering Delete

you can get different Ps pump setups that look a lot better and are lighter. have the best of both worlds. KRC makes some nice setups for the sbc, i have one on my 86.

Re: Power Steering Delete

I might if I had money. I'd rather put the money spent on a PS pump towards a paint job, though.

Re: Power Steering Delete

Removing the power steering pump itself saves very little weight and draws very little power from the engine. When steering straight, there is no power robbing pressure produced. It's only when you turn the wheels that pressure is produced and even then it's minimal unless right up against the steering stops.

Using a manual steering box reduces weight from not only the removal of the pump, lines etc but also from putting in a lighter box. It isn't difficult to steer and S-10 with manual steering. Why would it be difficult to steer a third gen. Just don't put wide tires on the front of the car. If you want wide front tires for cornering performance then you're going to want power steering anyway.

You can remove the pump from a power steering system by installing a hose loop over the box fittings but steering will be harder than with a manual box. The power steering box is designed for hydraulic assist. A manual box uses mechanical leverage with a different ratio to help with steering.

Although you'll have to do some modifications to make it fit, find an S-10 with a 2.5L and power steering. The pump and reservoir are separate items in a smaller package.
