PITMAN ARM

I need one and cant find one. anyone know a site with them?..I tried google, autozone, NAPA, advanced auto, and a GM dealership...no luck. I read an older post of someone looking for one and everyone told him they dont go bad... well the actual steel part dont go bad but the boot does as mine is... sooo I cant even find a replacement boot. Any ideas? im sure someone had to replace it or referb it sometime.

Re: PITMAN ARM

The idler arm does go bad, in fact it's the weakest link in the steering on a 3rd gen.

And yes it does have a dust boot. Just not sure if you can buy it separately. It might be difficult to find one because the original and aftermarket style are various different sizes. If you ask real nice, a shop that does wheel alignment might let you go through thier scrap bin and you can find a matching size from a discarded suspension component.

Re: PITMAN ARM

I am dumb. The pitarm is a non wear item and does not have a boot. The boot that touches the pitman arm is actually part of the centre link.

Re: PITMAN ARM

Right: the Pitman arm is just a chunk of metal. No moving or wearing parts. That's why you can't find one: you don't need one in the first place.

The center link has all the joints in it. If there's slack where the Pitman arm meets the center link (as there often is), replace the center link and leave the Pitman arm alone. If the dust boot is bad, change the center link. You might be surprised to find that you probably really do need one.

Re: PITMAN ARM

I bought the sphon performance rebuild kit, it comes with the center link... the boot attached to the pitman arm and centerlink is not on the centerlink because it did not come with one.... there is not suppose to be slack between the pitman and the centerlink...the tires should not move freely on a lift with the pitman arm not moving.. the only reson im looking for a new pitman is for that boot and I would buy just the boot but I cannot find that anywhere nor a new pitman. I havenot installed the new frontend rebuild yet its common sense that I will have the same problem without that new boot. I just had it on a lift and seen the boot was destroyed so dont say there is not on there, they would not make a system like that with metal to metal contact or u would grind the **** out of your parts.

Re: PITMAN ARM

Right... the joint in the center link is supposed to be tight. The Pitman arm has nothing to do with that. It's just a big chunk of metal with a hole at each end.

the only reson im looking for a new pitman is for that boot
You won't find a Pitman arm because they don't go bad. Even if you did, it wouldn't come with the boot, because the boot is part of the center link, because the joint it protects is in the center link, not in the Pitman arm.

they would not make a system like that with metal to metal contact
Not sure where you're going with this... the boot has NOTHING to do with any of that... all it does, is cover up the joint, to keep the grease IN and the funk OUT.

You used to could buy entire "kits" of those boots in various designer colors; might want to look through ES's catalog and such as that, maybe they still have em. Maybe even in "designer black".

Or, call Spohn (last time I did, Steve answered) and order one from him to replace the one that got destroyed.

Re: PITMAN ARM

THE only replacment pitmen ares you will dig up in the aftermarket will be the Ricky Race ones (go fast. turn left) type. verry cool looking.

starting in the $100+ ball park

you can somtimes dig them up on ebay for under $30

looking in the NASCAR parts type stuff.

mine came gold Zink plated steel Billet. verry trick looking. Screams Race car! i paid $25 shipped
list was over $130

Re: PITMAN ARM

I thought I needed a pitman arm when I redid my whole suspension. Turns out that I didn't need a replacement. Mine is just a huge chunk of metal that has no cover what so ever.
