Torque Arm BANGS around when i shift
When i put my car into gear the torque are goes "BANG" up against its little rubber mounting bracket.
I just put a Th350 in the car, and made the bracket to hold it, the problem is not that, its how much the torque arm moves when the car is put into gear / shifts. Its moving up very fast and very hard, is this normal? if so, how would i soften this bang? first i thought my rear end was going then i thougnt my tranny was going... all this banging around... then i noted the torque arm bangs everything all around up and down when you take the bracket off. sheesh. I wana make it quiet! can i remove it? would that be bad?

Removing your torque arm would be very bad. That is what keeps your rearend from twisting up and down. Try a polyurethane mount. They work a lot better than the stock pieces because of the added stiffness.

I have a energy suspension urethane tranny mount. thats not the problem, its the torque arm moving up and down when it goes into gear. my other car does it too, it just doesnt make a BANG noise.

The front bushing insulates the torque arm from any metal to metal contact and should hush any banging. You can get this bushing in rubber or poly. If your car is idling really high, you'll get a lot of movement when you drop it in gear.
Check to see if the arm is hitting something else somewhere along its length. Does your new bracket have enough clearance around it?

The new bracket does. the torque arm, now that you mention it, is up against the side of the car. It wont clear the driveshaft unless its up against the side of the car like this. Other than that, the car idles around 1000 RPMS before it goes into gear, but has a really high stall which absorbs the impact, but not as much as i would like. My other car, 89 RS, idles at higher than that, in neutral (open loop) but i put it in gear and instead of "BANG" it "Slides" into gear, smooth and fluid motion. Maybe because my TH350 has a shift kit it "Chirps" itself into gear. this cant be good.

2 reasons why your torque arm would be hitting the car, your panhard bar is bent or you've got an offcenter tranny. Something isn't right if the torque arm is hit. My car is doing the same thing, the tranny mount was bad AND the torque arm bushing is bad. I replaced the tranny mount and no the tranny doesn't hit the tunnel, just now the torque arm isn't doing it's job. The torque arm shouldn't hit the car, something is not right.

Thats's your problem. You shouldn't have any trouble running a th350 in a thirdgen. Back when I had a th350 I never had to move the torque arm to clear the driveshaft.

Yes it will jump around with any transmission you put in the car. It sounds like your homemade mount isn't working--it needs to be padded on the top bottom with rubber or poly and located so it doesn't interfere with anything.
